Viral Cleaning Hacks for the Everyday
There is nothing I love more than to find an additional use for things I already have around the house-- especially when it comes to cleaning! One of the easiest ways to be more sustainable? Use what you've already got!
The Washing Machine: It's important to clean out your washing machine filter every month, this will help with any odours and keep your machine running well!
Didn't know your washing machine even had a filter? Don't worry, you're not the only one!
This TikTok video went viral earlier this year, because really who knew we had to wash our washing machines?

I found my filter at the bottom of the machine. Make sure to grab some towels and a bowl for any water that may pour from the overflow.
Unscrew the filter and give it a good scrub. This is what mine looked like-- not too bad!
Once you've cleaned out the filter, toss a few dish tabs and run an express cycle, your washing machine will be fresh as a lemon!
Burnt Pots and Pans:
Clean a pan or pot with burnt food without breaking a sweat! Pop a dishwasher tab into your pot or pan, add water and let it warm up on the stove for about 20 minutes.
The dish tab will dissolve and break down the burnt food. So easy!
Using an oven mitts, bring the pan over to the sink, pour out all that gunk and Bob's your uncle!
The Dishwasher:
There is absolutely nothing worse than a smelly dishwasher! Now, I know we're putting dish tabs in the dishwasher every cycle, but that's only tackling the dishes. Give your dishwasher a quick clean with some vinegar!
Every 10-15 loads, place 2 cups of vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher and run an express cycle. This will help freshen up your dishwasher and get rid of any funky smells!
The Microwave:
Vinegar is great for cleaning up your microwave as well! Put a bowl of vinegar and let it warm up for about 3 minutes. The steam helps loosen up cooked on food and stains, and you can just wipe them away with a wet rag.
Tea and Coffee Stained Cups:
A simple paste of water and baking soda will help fade those stains right away. In a small bowl, mix baking soda and water until it forms a paste.
Work the paste into the stains and simply wipe away!
The Sink:
Keep your sink fresh without any chemicals! Just slice a lemon in half, sprinkle baking soda over the cut half and let it bubble.
Work into your sink-- and around the drain! Let it sit for a minute, and rinse away!
Stainless Steel Appliances:
I love the look of stainless steel, but with a husband, 3 teenagers and a dog, my appliances need a little extra help to stay shiny.
I dab a little baby oil onto a microfibre cloth and work it into the toaster, fridge, stove-- whatever!
Now, just buff away, it’ll keep your appliances shiny and keep fingerprints off!
